Woven, BOPP, paper-laminated or liner: which bag does your product need?

Four constructions, four different jobs. A short decision guide covering strength, moisture protection and shelf appeal — and the questions worth answering before you ask anyone for a price.

Most packaging enquiries begin with a price question. It is almost always the wrong place to start, because the four main sack constructions are not competing versions of the same thing — they solve different problems. Pick the construction first and the price conversation becomes straightforward.

Here is how the four ranges differ in practice, and which one tends to win for a given product.

Start with the product, not the bag

Three properties of what you are packing decide almost everything: whether it is hygroscopic, whether it will sit on a retail shelf, and how it will be handled between your line and the customer's.

A dry, robust product moving pallet-to-pallet in bulk needs strength and not much else. A powder that clumps when it meets humidity needs a barrier. A consumer-facing product needs print quality, because the bag is doing marketing work as well as containment.

PP / HD woven — the default for dry bulk

Woven polypropylene is the most common sack in the packing industry, and for good reason: outstanding tensile strength, puncture and tear resistance, and a low unit weight that means more bags per pallet and lower storage cost.

It takes custom printing with your logo or text, and options exist for easy-opening, UV protection and anti-skid handling. If the contents need protecting from moisture as well, a PE liner can be added inside rather than changing construction entirely.

Typical fits: fertilizers, feeds, grains, flours, salt, sugar, cement and seeds.

BOPP laminated — when the bag has to sell

BOPP gives you the same woven strength with the highest photographic print quality. Graphics are printed in up to 10 colours by flexo or rotogravure and sealed beneath the film, so handling and weather do not scuff them.

The back-seam style is the most popular, partly because it holds a consistent size — which matters a great deal if your filling line is automated. It is also water resistant, fade resistant, insect and rodent resistant, and fully recyclable.

Typical fits: cattle and poultry feed, fish feed, seeds, flour, rice and pet food — anything a buyer sees before they buy.

Paper-laminated — when moisture is the enemy

A paper-laminated woven bag is built in three layers or more: woven fabric inside for strength, a PE film in the middle as a water barrier, and kraft paper on top as a moisture barrier. For expensive or sensitive products, 4, 5 and 7-layer versions add further liners in paper or metallised film.

It comes in brown and white kraft, with or without poly liners and printing, and paper takes print beautifully — so most styles can be customised.

Typical fits: cement, milk powder, PVC resins, polymer compounds, guar gum, pharmaceutical and chemical products.

Liners — a component, not usually a category

LD and HDPE liners add a moisture or contamination barrier inside a woven or paper bag. They can also be supplied standalone. Most buyers arrive at liners as an answer to a problem they discovered in the other three ranges, rather than as a starting point.

If your product is hygroscopic or food-grade, raise it early — it changes the specification of the outer bag too.
