Why reverse printing keeps a feed bag looking new

Printing on the underside of the film instead of the outside of the bag sounds like a technicality. It is the difference between packaging that survives the supply chain and packaging that arrives scuffed.

A bag that looks superb leaving the plant and tired on arrival has failed at its job. Reverse printing is the main reason a BOPP laminated bag does not do that.

What reverse printing actually is

In conventional surface printing, ink sits on the outside of the pack. Every handling event — stacking, dragging, a wet warehouse floor, a long road journey — abrades it.

In reverse printing, the artwork is printed onto the inner face of the BOPP film, and that film is then laminated onto the woven fabric. The ink ends up sandwiched between the film and the bag. You are looking at the graphics through the film rather than at ink lying on top of it.

The result is high-gloss, high-resolution artwork with no ink smearing and no damage to the outside appearance of the bag.

What that buys you commercially

Presentation is the obvious gain: the consumer package keeps a sharp, eye-appealing look right through to the point of sale.

The less obvious gains matter more. Sealed graphics mean fewer packaging failures, which means fewer product losses in transit — and materially fewer product-liability claims where labelling and dosage information has to stay legible.

Because the film is doing protective work as well, the bag also gains water resistance, fade resistance, and resistance to insects and rodents.

Designing for up to 10 colours

Both flexo and rotogravure are available, up to 10 colours. That is enough for full photographic imagery, not just flat brand colours — which is why feed, seed, rice and pet food brands use it.

Two practical notes for whoever prepares your artwork. Supply vector files wherever possible, and keep critical text away from the seam and the sewn or sealed edges. If you are moving from an existing supplier, send a physical sample of the current bag as well as the files — matching a colour you can hold beats matching a colour someone described.

Proofing before the run

Artwork is prepared and a proof is issued for approval before anything runs at volume. Approve the proof, then a physical sample confirms construction, strength and print against your specification. Only then does the production run start.

It is a slower start than sending a file and hoping. It is considerably faster than reprinting fifty thousand bags.
